El Alamein

El Alamein is a town on the northern Egypt on the Mediterranean Sea coast, approximately 66 miles (106 kilometers) to the West of Alexandria.

The town is principally famous for two important World War II battles that were fought in the area, both in 1942. During the First Battle of El Alamein (July 1st to July 27th), Allied forces (principally British and Commonwealth) stopped the advance of Axis (German and Italian forces) into Egypt. At the Second Battle of El Alamein (October 23rd to November 4th), Allied forces went on the attack and broke the Axis line, eventually forcing the Axis troops into a retreat that only ended when they had been pushed all the way back across North Africa to Tunisia.
