EgyptWelcome to Travel Guide 2 Egypt, the site about travel, tourism and vacations in Egypt. The Arab Republic of Egypt (Arabic: Gumhuriyyet Ma?r el-'Arabiyyah) is a country most located in North Africa, but also including the Sinai Peninsula which is a the landbridge between Asia and Africa, and which is considered part of Asia. Egypt has land borders with the Gaza Strip and Israel to the East, with Libya to the West, and Sudan to the South. There are coasts lines in the North with the Mediterranean Sea, and in the East with the Red Sea (including the Gulf of Aqaba and the Gulf of Suez). The country is also home to the Suez Canal which connects the Mediterranean to the Red sea's Gulf of Suez,
Egypt is one of the most populous countries in Africa, with an estimated population of over
80 million as of
2007.
The capital and largest city, with a population of around 15.75 million people in the metropolitan
area is Cairo (Arabic: Al-Qahirah).
The most important sectors of the Egyptian economy are agriculture, media, petroleum exports, and tourism. Additonally, remittances from more than 3 million Egyptians working abroad (principally in Saudi Arabia, the Persian Gulf and Europe) make an important contribution to the economy, and Suez Canal tolls are a significant source of government revenue. For the past two decades, Egypt has generally averaged around 4% ot 5% growth per annum. This has been achieved in large part as a result of economic reforms that began 1991, which relaxed many price controls, reduced subsidies, reduced inflation, cut taxes, and liberalized trade and investment.
